Skorseth commits to DePaul
Lake Buena Vista, FL--
A congratulations is in order to AAU Athletics member Paige Skorseth on her commitment to run track and cross country for DePaul University.
Skorseth is the reigning Young Women's Cross Country National Champion and is looking forward to attending DePaul. We had the chance to catch up with her and see all that is going on and the goals and plans she has. To top it all off, Skorseth has kept a 4.0 GPA throughout high school!
What sports/activities/clubs do you participate in?
I participate in cross country, track, and gymnastics. I am also involved in Students Offering Support Club (S.O.S), National Honor Society (N.H.S), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (F.C.A.). I also like to volunteer for activities such as Habitat for Humanity projects, Feed My Starving Children, and Salvation Army Bell Ringing.
What school subjects do you enjoy the most and why?
I am a curious person and have enjoyed the balance and diversity of all academic subjects. I credit my teachers and counselors for keeping subject areas interesting and they have helped me significantly throughout the past twelve years. Science really seems to draw me in and chemistry, biology, and genetics seem particularly important and relevant in today’s world. In fact, I believe careers that use scientific principles and mathematics to make life better for individuals and society are truly heroic professions. My dream is to enter one of the rapidly changing healthcare fields, and at this point, human genetic counseling really interests me.
Any notable accomplishments or awards you have won?
I am one of the S.O.S senior representatives and each year I organize a local food drive for the River Falls Community Food Pantry, which will happen again this spring. Academically I have a published poem called “The Perfect World.” I also have a 4.0 GPA and am a three time academic letter winner. Athletically, I was recently named a 2012 Wendy’s High School Heisman Finalist. I am a ten time letter winner (cross country, gymnastics, and track). Individually in cross country I have captured one Conference Title, one Sectional Title, and have been named All-State three times. In 2012 I won the USATF State Cross Country Meet (5000m). In 2011 I won my first AAU Cross Country National Championship, and was able to defend it in 2012. Our team finished 4th at State in 2010 and 2011, and we have won three Conference and three Sectional Titles. Individually in gymnastics I have captured five Conference Titles, four Sectional Titles, and was named All-State three times. I led our team to a State Championship in 2010. I have also captured a few USATF State Track Championships, outdoors in the 1500m and indoors in the 1600m. I captured a Regional Championship in both the 1500m and 3000m in 2012. I am also the cross country and track captain.
Parents and siblings names (grade of siblings, if any)?
I am an only child and I am extremely close to my parents, Pete and Lisa. Their nurturing encouragement and support has helped me enjoy and accomplish more than I could ever imagine. We have so much fun together. I love you Mom and Dad!
Future goals -- college, running, career aspirations?
I have been admitted, and plan to attend, DePaul University’s College of Science and Health next fall. DePaul University offers a phenomenal academic curriculum; excellent and extensive research opportunities, and professional pathway programs with health care alliances in Chicago. This step will help me solidify my genetic counseling career path. I will continue to run cross country, indoor, and outdoor track.
Who has inspired or helped you reach your goals the most?
I credit my success to the hard work, knowledge and assistance provided by many amazing people. I have been supported by family, friends, coaches, teachers, athletic directors, teammates, fans, trainers, guidance counselors, principals, school boards, doctors, neighbors and even fellow competitors. All these people and organizations have worked together, inspired me, and are often the reason I am able to achieve my goals.
Congratulations again! We can't wait to see all that you'll be doing in the future.
